Indications/Uses
Treatment of acute severe asthma & routine management of chronic bronchospasm uresponsive to conventional therapy. Symptomatic relief of an acute attack, as part of the emergency treatment of acute severe asthma & as part of the long-term chronic therapy of asthma.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn ≥12 yr 2.5-5 mg  or 50-100 drops qid. Childn up to 12 yr 1.25-2.5 mg or 25-50 drops every 4-6 hr as needed. Severe airways obstruction Adult Max of 40 mg/day under strict medical supervision. Use w/ respirator or nebulizer over 5-15 min.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Not for threatened abortion. 1st trimester of pregnancy, eclampsia & severe pre-eclampsia, intra-uterine infection, intra-uterine fetal death, ante-partum hemorrhage, placenta praevia & cord compression.
Special Precautions
Hyperthyroidism. CV diseases eg, ischemic heart disease, arrhythmia or tachycardia, HTN, occlusive vascular disorders including arteriosclerosis & aneurysms. Anginal pain in patients w/ angina pectoris. May produce rebound congestion & rhinorrhea. Patients w/ DM or closed-angle glaucoma. Avoid in patients undergoing anesth w/ cyclopropane, halothane or other halogenated anesth as may induce ventricular fibrillation. Increased risk of arrhythmias w/ patients receiving cardiac glycosides, quinine or tricyclic antidepressants. Care in patients known to receive large doses of other sympathomimetic drugs. Hypokalemia in severe asthma as may be potentiated by hypoxia or concomitant administration of other antiasthma.
Adverse Reactions
Fine tremor of skeletal muscles particularly of the hands, palpitations, tachycardia, nervous tension, headaches, peripheral vasodilation; potentially serious hypokalaemia (after large doses); hypersensitivity reactions including paradoxical bronchospasm, angioedema, urticaria, hypotension & collapse.
Drug Interactions
Increased risk of hypokalemia w/ salbutamol & other β-agonists, corticosteroids, diuretics or xanthines. May prevent adrenergic bronchodilator w/ β-adrenergic blockes (eg, acebutolol, atenolol, labetolol, metoprolol, nadolol, pindolol, propranolol, timolol). Increased risk of heart problems w/ disopyramide, quinidine, phenothiazines or procainamide.
